How to remove the background from an animated GIF

Remove a GIF background without manually splitting frames. Choose transparent GIF or video output and check the complete animation.

Open GIF Background Remover, upload your GIF, choose the export format and review the credits. Transparent and GIF output are selected for you.

A manual GIF workflow can involve extracting the frames, masking the subject in each image and rebuilding the animation. Here, AI handles the initial separation across the animation, so you can begin without setting up an animation editor.

Before uploading

Use a GIF with a clear, visible subject. Strong motion blur, low contrast and small details make the edges harder to separate. The uploader also accepts MP4, MOV, WebM and M4V if you want to turn a video into a GIF cutout.

The remover’s file limits are 200 MB as a guest or 2,000 MB when signed in; each video dimension must be 4,090 pixels or less. Follow the current sign-in and verification prompts before submitting.

1. Upload the animation

Choose Upload a video or GIF, select your file and wait for the upload to finish. Check that you picked the animation you intended to process. If the workspace reports missing duration information, reselect the file before trying again.

2. Choose GIF or a transparent video format

FormatChoose it whenWhat to consider
GIFYour app expects an animated sticker or short GIF loopLimited palette; pixels are either fully transparent or opaque
WebM VP9You need softer transparent edges in a compatible appThe destination must support VP9 transparency
MOV ProRes KSYou want to continue in a compatible editorCheck ProRes alpha support in that editor
MKV VP9Your editing workflow accepts VP9 in MKVConfirm both the container and alpha support

The dedicated page offers transparent exports. Standard MP4 is a solid-background output in the homepage remover, so it is not a substitute for an alpha-compatible download.

3. Review the settings and generate

Confirm the selected animation and export format in GIF Background Remover. Review the current credit estimate beside Generate, then submit the task. See Pricing for subscriptions and credit packs.

4. Review the complete cycle and download

When the task completes, play the whole result and inspect the subject’s edges as it moves. Download it within the displayed 7-day storage period.

Place the file over a colored background in an app that supports GIF transparency. A solid player canvas does not necessarily mean that the background is encoded into the GIF. If an app converts or flattens the file, return to the original download and check its supported import settings.

What to do when the edges look rough

GIF transparency has less subtle edge detail than an alpha-capable video. If soft hair or motion edges matter more than GIF compatibility, choose WebM VP9 or another supported transparent video format. For precise corrections, continue in an editor.

AI reduces the repeated frame-preparation work; it does not guarantee flawless separation or a fixed completion time. A clear subject and a short test clip make the first result easier to judge.

Common questions

Will my GIF still move?

Yes. This workflow processes the animation across its frames rather than returning a single still image. Review the full generated cycle before using it.

Can I make a transparent GIF from a video?

Yes. Upload a suitable video and keep GIF as the output. If you need a full video workflow with softer edges, choose an available alpha-compatible video format instead.

Does GIF output include audio?

No. GIF has no audio. If you need sound, choose video output and check the downloaded file. The remover does not provide an audio toggle.

Why does a task still say it is generating?

A task can be queued or processing. Avoid submitting duplicates while you check its status. If it remains unresolved, contact support with the task identifier and the error shown in the workspace. A browser refresh does not restart model processing.
